"Well, I'll admit that I didn't think they'd let you go. I'm also sorry to see you leave. You've been a great asset to the place. I'm going to miss you."

Abe chuckled again, then sighed with glee and expectation.

****** The morning was bright, cloudless and clear. Soon, he would be able to feed to his dead heart's content. He imagined lifeblood gushing into his face and relished the thought like a fine morsel of meat rolling around on his tongue.

The Elder Dead were always talking about a plan. They preached that deaders were approaching a time that would allow them all to live free from shackling. They preached about how, soon, the world would be one great resting place for all.

But Abe didn't want rest. He wanted to feed. It didn't take him long to reach City Hall. Not only was the town relatively small, but also it was sparse. Only about twenty thousand souls inhabited Drillpepper, both living and not-quite-dead. Most times, everybody got along, all things considered.

Abe casually strolled down the quaint roadway until he reached the majestic building that had been dubbed City Hall. He recalled hearing once that it used to be a library. Either way, it was the only building that actually abutted the wall that surrounded and protected Drillpepper from the badlands beyond.

The so-called Pearly Gates had been constructed adjacent to the building and the Walls ran outward from it on both sides. The Gates were white, always white, like a huge pearl that had been carved and divided. An artificial hill had also been built; the massive Gates rested at the center of this hill.

There was a livie on a podium beside the bleached white gates. Wearing black robes and gesticulating wildly, he had command of a moderate audience that stood below on the steps leading up to the Gate. They would go no further than the bottom step for fear of the wrath of the Warders that patrolled the borders. They were massive forms, easily six to eight feet tall. Specially summoned by the Elder Ones, they were the dead of the dead and were a force to be reckoned with. One did not go up against a Warder without enough support to put down a small army.

There were always four of them stationed at the Gates. It would not do to have any instances of wanton chaos. One look alone from a Warder was usually enough to subdue an unruly crowd.

Abe noticed a fair number of people in the crowd. Both livie and deader held up signs:

No more the Death door

Deader go home

Damn dirty Deaders

Life is wasted on the living

No more, these shackles

The livie's voice boomed forcefully.

"It is the Way, it is the Will; it is the Word of the Truce. Within the confines of the Civilized Regions, we abide by the Codes of Conduct as set forth in the Constitution of Rights and Freedoms. No man, no woman, young or old, living or dead shall comport themselves in any manner other than that of proper respect amongst equals.
